I finished reading The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King by Holly Black two days ago and I have to admit... not my favorite. I was interested in the duology because I knew that Holly Black worked a lot with Cassandra Clare and they've created works and short stories together, so I was interested to see what Black came up with on her own and even moreso, the synopsis of both books looked so good and came highly recommended to me. I think the biggest reason for my disappointment was that I had high expectations, from reading the back of the book and the reviews, it seemed to have everything I wanted. Magic, faeries (which I am currently obsessing over), a doomed romance, and a human girl to save the day... I mean, how could all of that turn out bad? And it's not that the book was bad, I feel like it had so much potential and she just didn't do everything she could with it. The characters were amazing, the storyline was seriously impressive and full of plot twists. However, I don't think this is going to make sense, but while everything was so exciting and in the midst of everything going on and the climax of the story was fast approaching, the writing style is what kept it dull. I loved Jude and I loved her with Cardan and I wanted more, more, more of them! And I was severely upset when I finished The Wicked King and was like "wait, that's it?" And perhaps it's not really fair of me to judge the whole book on the fact that there wasn't enough romance for me, I mean, it's not a romance novel, I just thought it was going to be. It was also a lot more political than I expected. I mean, obviously not like the current politics, but faerie politics which was different. Nevertheless, I definitely didn't hate the book, it was rather pretty good, I just felt a little let down. You definitely won't see it in my Top 10, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. If you check out the reviews and quotes on goodreads, there's a ton of people who loved this book and are comparing it to Sarah J. Maas (which, in my opinion is totally bizarre) but you might find that you love this series. I probably will buy and read and love the third book, The Queen of Nothing (?), and the last of the Folk of the Air Trilogy, when it finally comes out and I'll definitely do a Current Read on it when I do, but until then, these are my thoughts. Sorry if this is your favorite series and I've just offended you!
